It doesn't matter if you are a complete newcomer or an old timer, if you haven't already it is time to learn about Shrapnel and the Universal Ammo bonus!
Shrapnel is one of the most common items you will loot in the game, often called "filler loot". It is something you loot when you don't loot a cool item or a usable crafting resource. However, there is one detail that makes Shrapnel specail. You can convert it into Universal Ammo (UA), which is an ammunition type that can be used by almost every weapon, and many tools as well.
Why convert?
The main reason is that you get 1% extra PED value when converting. If you have 100 PED worth of Shrapnel, you will get 101 PED worth of Universal Ammo. The downside is that you cannot sell Universal Ammo, you need to use it to get the value back. So think twice before converting, but it is certainly worth it if you plan on using it.
Another good reason is that everything can use Universal Ammo, so you don't need to keep track of different kinds of ammunition.
Converting Shrapnel to Universal Ammo and get the bonus
To convert is very simple! Just find it in your inventory, right click on it, and press "Convert to Ammo"
You will get a notification showing you how much Universal Ammo you got, and you can then find it in the Weapons tab.
